What the data shows

A consistent record across successive releases

I first appear in the 2017 single-year dataset. I do not appear in the 2017 or 2018 career-long selections, and then appear in both the career-long and single-year datasets for every data year from 2019 to 2024.

The charts use 13 current observations. The original September 2022 version-four rows are retained in the underlying archive but excluded here because the corrected version-five release superseded them.

These figures should be read with care

Citation indicators and rankings are not a complete or definitive measure of research quality. They can be affected by database coverage, author-profile changes, field assignment, self-citation, collaboration patterns and strategic behaviour. The figures are presented here for transparency and should be considered alongside qualitative evidence and the underlying methodology.

There is also concern that being in the “Stanford top 2%” list is an indicator that some people see as a target, and will try to get on the list, perhaps, using methodologies that are unethical (such as maximising their citations).

How this page was assembled

Dataset meaning

Career-long data accumulates citation impact through the stated year. Single-year data measures citations received during that calendar year.

Identity checks

Records were matched using name, Nottingham affiliations, country, research subfield and longitudinal metric continuity. The 2017 row was also confirmed directly by Graham Kendall.

Known source issue

The 2020 archive reports a first publication year of 1991. Graham's first paper was published in 1999, which is the year reported in subsequent releases.
